Jeremy Dibbell at Philobiblos writes a all-too-brief review of the big Americana sale at Sothebys, of the James S. Copley collection and notes, rightly, the Button Gwinnett Letter Signed as Member of Congress (co-signed by Hancock, Robert Morris, Francis Lewis, George Read, and Arthur Middleton, and in the handwriting of Timothy Matlock). I could see it going for three quarters of a million.

The Lincoln autograph letter to Gen. George B/ McClellan which JD describes is also important--it's written when Lee was putting pressure on Washington, DC, while McClellan was sloooooowly approaching Richmond. War is also politics, as McClellan never seemed to realize on some levels.

Jeremy covers the biggies, including a printed copy of the Constitution, with the responses of an anti-Federalist, Aaron Wood, written on it.
